Accessibility: What It Is For and Where It is Going?
The presentation on developing websites for accessibility was given by Sharron Rush and Richard Schwerdtfeger at SXSW on Sunday March 14, 2010. The session began with an overview of accessibility issues and value to the overall web population, but when it started getting into CSS and code that was over my head I bailed to the Web of Things presentation.
10:33:09 AM: How can we get past the fear of “accessibility”? Think about it as including ALL people, not adding another population.
10:35:09 AM: For people with disabilities technology makes possible things that were never possible before.
10:37:15 AM: Unity for Gallaudet on YouTube videos in ASL only (no captions) not accessible to non-ASL speakers
10:41:50 AM: Good design is accessible design
10:43:57 AM: Browser accessibility has surpassed the desktop, browser does the hard work you have to do by hand in OS
10:49:07 AM: Accessibility is forever, there is always a new technology that will require accessibility.
10:50:27 AM: Google Maps very inaccessible, mashups can multiply that issue.
10:53:50 AM: Flexible personalized web – where accessibility becomes a preference
10:56:59 AM: Add accessibility preferences to CSS: access mode, adaptation type, preset by user and content display needs are met
