Amazon.com Same Day Delivery Aims To Enable Early Rising Sloths

Amazon.comVery lazy people who require immediate gratification will be dismayed with Amazon.com’s announcement today about their new same day delivery.  First, you have to live in one of the 7 cities where it is being rolled out (New York, Philadelphia, Boston,  Washington DC, Baltimore, Las Vegas and Seattle).  Sloths in Chicago, Indianapolis and Phoenix will be served in a few months. Impatient agoraphobics in the rest of the country are out of luck for the foreseeable future.  Second, you better know what you want before lunch because otherwise next day is the fastest that you are going to get your stuff.

Yup, check the fine print becuase in New York and Philadelphia you need to place your order by 10:00 AM to get a delivery by the end of the day.  In Boston, Washington DC and Baltimore we have time for a second cup of coffee before having to make a decision at 10:30 AM.  Gamblers in Las Vegas can sleep in until 11:00 AM and lucky Seattle residents can wait until a more reasonable 1:00 PM.

So my question is how big a market is people living in a major metropolitan area who are too lazy to schlep to a book store, but have the where-with-all to order their short-term material needs by mid morning? Pretty small I bet.

Harvard Book Store DeliveryHere’s a tip for the home-bound bibliophiles living in the Boston metro area.  You can shop local with Harvard Book Store who offers same day/ next day delivery of books in Cambridge, Boston, Somerville, Brookline, Charlestown and Watertown by emission-free metroped.  Check their map for details by zip code. You have until lunch (12:00 noon) to make your decision and it’s only $5, which is cheaper than from Amazon.  That’s a win, win, win, win situation!  Harvard Book Store even print books on demand from a catalog of 3.6 million books, which are available in about 4 minutes.  Add a fifth win to that list.
