Good to know I'm not the only one who fell for this. I'm so angry! And it's worse that it took me using this in several recipes to realize that what I had bought was not baking powder! I actually thought maybe TJ's had mislabelled their product on accident, because the packaging is SO similar to baking powder!

I know your post was mostly about expectations in marketing, but again, thank you for letting me get the baking disaster off my chest.

AGH! Thank you, thank you for your post. I just spent the last 45 minutes preparing a batch of scones, wondering why the dough tasted funny and finally trashing a good dozen scones. I picked up the can of what I expected was fresh baking powder and instead, too late, found that it was Trader Joe's baking SODA. I sent off a pretty strong note to Trader Joe's headquarters before I found your post.

Perhaps its because people don't cook much these days and the packager/designer thought it would be nicer, but it was a terrible idea and Trader Joe's need to know it! I will probably never again buy baking supplies at Trader Joe's just because of this one incident. I am going to dump Trader Joe's baking soda right down the drain so I don't make this mistake again.

It was MY mistake, but like you mention... people have expectations, and one of those is not to have to guess about the contents of a container that has for many years been the traditional container for a baking ingredient. I am 54 and for as long as I've been cooking, baking soda comes in a box and baking powder comes in a can.

I am steaming right now... and no scones to comfort me. Thank you for letting me vent.
twf

PS. I work in design and advertising, so the whole thing makes me even madder!! What were they thinking?
