10:54:03 AM: RT @SterlingBooks: 2.0 is an amorphous term – quality comes from collaboration, innovation, but not strict preplanning.

10:54:47 AM: RT @Beckland: We found that you get great quality information, navigability, etc when we get out of the way of users

10:55:02 AM: RT @kekocher: If you want to control the outcome, control the process

10:55:56 AM: RT @CharlesOuthier: 2.0 = freeform visible emergent non-credentialist approaches to group work done & supporting tech

10:56:08 AM: RT @walkerfenton: sharepoint is white hot. lots of competitors emerging…

10:56:17 AM: RT @Beckland: McKinsey: enterprise 2.0 survey for last 3 years; each year numbers increase for ROI of tools

10:57:04 AM: RT @bettywriter: reaching a tipping point w/free-form tools? McKinsey study shows biz benefits. Social software maturing

10:57:49 AM: RT @Beckland: Explaining Facebook to corporate users & trying to make the case for biz is a failure, they must try it

10:59:11 AM: Don’t show Facebook feature examples, better example of benefit is to show before & after.

10:59:49 AM: RT @Beckland: Why aren’t more people buying TiVO despite obvious benefits & great user advocacy? People love of the status quo.

10:59:56 AM: RT @Beckland: Tech industry burned themselves by overselling and over promising tech solutions to corporate America

11:00:14 AM: RT @Beckland: corporations are unimpressed by features and novelty; those are actually problems to overcome

11:00:48 AM: RT @SterlingBooks: “Middle Management is the transmission belt of an organization” – essential, despite new features.

11:02:06 AM: RT @Beckland: Ouch. Tech industry says don’t need middle management. But need middle management to adopt our solutions within organizations

11:02:28 AM: RT @bettywriter: Corporate mindset: ROI-seeking, convinced of their own uniqueness.

11:03:07 AM: RT @Beckland: Corp managers are voracious consumers of theory; hence the rise of the biz book industry

11:03:28 AM: RT @bettywriter: Corporate mindset: Swayed by theory, evidence, narratives, peers; afraid of being left behind.

11:05:17 AM: RT @Beckland: Tech ind makes buzz phrases as a form of self congratulation, but constant churn of jargon is tough for corporations

11:07:15 AM: Trend: scholars writing accessible books that put the tools in our hands

This week LinkedIn added Twitter integration so that tweets from your selected Twitter account can also update your status on LinkedIn. You can either have all tweets update your status on LinkedIn or only tweets with a #li or #in hashtag.

It’s about time that LinkedIn got linked up with Twitter like most other social networks, but it’s too little at this point. I want more.

Current integration of Twitter status updates with other social media networks is too clunky; either all of your tweets go to the other social networks or you have to use a hashtag. Routing all your tweets to Facebook or Linked in means that you end up boring your family and friends with those business links or Twitter-specific chatter that they really don’t care about. Send all of your tweets to LinkedIn and that can result in some serious oversharing for a business network and major work:life conflicts.

Sure, you can add a hashtag to your tweets in order to ensure that only specific tweets appear on certain social networks. But isn’t that hashtag in your status update just a blemish that says “I don’t care enough to update my status specifically for his network, but I’ll cc: you on some of my tweets.” Different social networks are different communities and I want customization so that I can send unique status updates that deliver the specific content that is of interest to individual communities and audiences. Oh, and did I mention that I want it all in one app?

So far the application that is doing it best is the IM client Digsby. Not only does Digsby aggregate all of your IM accounts (including Facebook and Google Talk) and your social networks, but it also allows you to update your status across multiple social networks. The status update window is a Global Status Update window from which you can check off which specific social network (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace and even your IM status) you want updated. Digsby even knows what social network stream you clicked “update status” in and checks that network off automatically. Adding links and sharing images is easy too. Excellent. No more unregulated tweets to your social networks and no more hashtags that show which of your networks are second class citizens.

Now if anyone is listening, I want this on my BlackBerry. It seems like Loopt might do the trick, but I can’t seem to download it for my BlackBerry 8310. If anyone has suggestions for BlackBerry applications that will perform this little trick please let me know.

You’d think that Amazon would make it easy to share your wishlist data in any way that you want so that people buy you stuff through them. Amazon does have a nice set of widgets to add to your site with their branding, but no RSS feed as far as I can tell. I was using Yahoo pipes to generate an RSS feed, but that seems to have stopped working for some reason. Luckily there is My Amazon Wishlist RSS Feeds which will generate your wishlist RSS feeds based on your Amazon.com account email address. Thanks to them I was back lifestreaming my wishlist updates in no time.

Zune Playlists

It seems that either there is an issue with Yahoo pipes that effects both Amazon Wishlists and Zune plays, or the upgrade for the ZuneHD broke this RSS feed (I suspect the latter). Regardless, RSS feed has not been updated since the middle of Spetember. There isn’t a new pipe yet so I’ve had to revert to an older RSS feed to http://socialapi.zune.net/members/[member id XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX]/playlists/BuiltIn-RecentTracks. You’ll still need to figure out your Zune Member GUID.

Iwon’t be able to create a new Yahoo pipe, but I’m happy to collaborate if anyone is interested.

Good luck with your lifestreaming.

This summer I wrote about how Facebook’s privacy settings could be the real game changer in their challenging Twitter and reversing the role of Facebook aggregating my Tweets to Twitter broadcasting the subset of my Facebook updates. In that post I gave the following example of how the privacy settings could lead to this happening:

From Facebook I can share the fencing exploits of my daughter to just the family and friends who really care, then, with the same tool, rave about a new restaurant, mark the sharing privacy “everyone,” and share that with the entire internet when it appears on my public page. My hope is that status updates to “everyone” will also be available as an RSS feed that I can then send to Twitter therefore exploiting that medium’s broadcasting abilities.

In thinking recently about how I use Twitter and Facebook I realized that I missed the one piece that is critical to making this work. That piece is third party apps.

While the majority of status updates on Facebook are made on Facebook.com, that is not true for Twitter. The majority of Twitter users use third party applications, as opposed to Twitter.com, to tweet. Some use the Tweetdeck website, iPhone users seem to like Tweetie, I use UberTwitter on my BlackBerry, there are tons of other applications at oneforty. For people to switch from Twitter to Facebook as the source of status updates robust applications will be needed and most importantly they will need the privacy setting feature built into the application and easily used and accessible. It’s a key requirement in order for Facebook to become the source of status updates and rule social media.

Brief aside: Facebook announced the addition of status update privacy settings in June. So far I haven’t seen anything. Thoughts around how to take advantage of this feature may be moot.

I was turned on to ÜberTwitter for BlackBerry the other night by Amanda Palmer’s use of the application. ÜberTwitter is not getting a lot of press and their website has very little information about the application or it’s features, but don’t let that scare you away. ÜberTwitter’s combination of speed, reliability and features has not only made this my BlackBerry Twitter application of choice in record time it has completely changed my experience of Twitter on a cell phone. The different views that ÜberTwitter provides expands the Twitter experience on the phone from a broadcast medium into a truely social and exploratory one. Then it gives your the tools to interact with that network easily and deeply.

First of all there is ÜberTwitter’s speed. Either I’ve been using slow and buggy BlackBerry apps or ÜberTwitter is outstanding in this area. Your Twitter stream is updated regularly and fairly instantaneously and without any noticeable lag in functionality like I have noticed in other apps. Sending Tweets is just as easy and fast.

If speed and reliability were the only benefits that UberTwitter brought to the smart phone Twitter experience that would have been enough, but ÜberTwitter provides a smorgasbord of features that mightily enhance browsing and posting. ÜberTwitter has standard views like the Twitter timeline, your friend’s updates, replies and direct messages. Then ÜberTwitter takes it up a notch with other views like Everyone Near You that shows Tweets from nearby Twitterers, Trending Topics that lists the top 10 topics on Twitter with links to recent Tweets on those topics, and a Search Twitter feature as well. You can view My Friends with detailed information on your friends which is helpful to check a bio or click-through to a website, and My Followers which has the same information on everyone following you.

ÜberTwitter also expands your view of Twitterers beyond a profile picture. Selecting “view” for a Tweet gives you detail on the Twitterer including their name, bio, location, website and number of followers. Users who have location enabled from their phone will display a Google map of where they are. Another great display addition are Twitpics downloaded and visible without having to click through to them. It would be great if that was true for other sites like Flickr as well.

Twittering yourself is also enhanced with easy ReTweeting, Copy Tweet, Spell Check, and Shrink Tweet that condenses words in Tweets to help you keep within 140 characters, example. There is also a setting to update your Google Talk status with your Tweets if you like.

Finally, ÜberTwitter utilizes the same cell tower triangulation trick that Google Maps does, or GPS if you have it, to determine your location and then include your location in your Tweets, pictures, and profile. I don’t know why ÜberTwitter is not getting the amount of notice as other applications or has limited support on their website, but the combination of speed and features that ÜberTwitter deliveres makes it by far the best Twitter app that I’ve ever used on the BlackBerry. Give it a try and see for yourself.

While Facebook has been inching closer to Twitter-like functionality for awhile I see the publishing privacy change that they are rolling out in the next few weeks as the first real run at assuming Twitter’s position in the online attention marketplace.

So far Facebook’s functionality changes to publishing; the addition of the News Feed, more general sharing options, and real time feed updates all brought Facebook’s functionality closer to what Twitter got us used to and enjoyed, but certainly didn’t replace Twitter. The limiting factor to that was Facebook’s privacy policy. Facebook was a closed set of relationships, while Twitter allowed you to broadcast to the greater web. That was the key differentiator, but now it is changing.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s what’s I am referring to. Up to this point Facebook’s privacy filters were applied very broadly. You set up your privacy filters to allow one group of people (large or small) to see some subset of your personal data, your status and links, your wall posts, etc. , but privacy was set within those broad categories. You couldn’t share one wall post with one group and different one with a different group. The same people who would read about your excitement over the arrival of a new niece would also read about your excitement over the latest jQuery implementation, which was usually fine, but a limitation that kept Facebook updates and Twitter on the same footing in that regard.

With Facebook’s new privacy settings for the publisher you can now be more specific about who you share your published items with. Share general news with everyone, share your personal information with friends only and share with specific groups things that only apply to them. Targeting this privacy setting will be as easy as clicking a button in the publisher. I feel that the ability to customize may be the game changer for whether people aggregate information from Facebook rather than to Facebook as we have done in the past.

I joined Twitter first and Facebook later and for all that time I have used Twitter as my default microblogging platform, importing my Tweets into Facebook. Twitter is the platform that I use to share news, promote business, meet new people and I keep Facebook as the location for established friends and family where I share more private information. For this reason I don’t export by Facebook updates to Twitter, but I do import my Tweets to Facebook

The new privacy functionality may upend that process for me. With the new privacy controls from Facebook I can share the fencing exploits of my daughter to just the family and friends who really care, then, with the same tool, rave about a new restaurant, mark the sharing privacy “everyone,” and share that with the entire internet when it appears on my public page. My hope is that status updates to “everyone” will also be available as an RSS feed that I can then send to Twitter therefore exploiting that medium’s broadcasting abilities. And thus Facebook becomes the handiest of the Twitter publishing programs and the microblogging platform of choice. The aggregator becomes the source and the source the aggregator.
