I’ve mentioned the following strip from last month a few times to friends as a turning point for me because reading it I identified with the pointy haired boss and thought that Dilbert was being a royal dick to him. Reading it now I think that it’s not as bad as all that, but I was reacting to my almost daily need to budget projects based on an incomplete or even barely existent scope, user requirements or process for developing the end product. Despite that I usually know when a budget is too high for the project can withstand. I take a stab at what I think that it will be based on the information that I have and a defined scope that I know will change once the project is underway.

Of course I don’t fire people for going over budget, it’s actually me who feels the sharp lash of actuals. If that’s what is causing Dilbert’s reaction then I understand the frustration, but if it’s the desire to scope out the entire project before estimating a budget then he is a dick with unreasonable expectations. Give the pointy haired dude a break.
