Don’t Fear Your Audience
The value of user comments and reviews in driving trust, spreading the word and encouraging conversion has been pretty well documented, but now there’s data on the overwhelmingly positive nature of these reviews. A study from the Keller Fay Group and Bazaarvoice finds that in their survey of 1300 reviewers positive reviews outweighed negative reviews 8 to 1. 79% of reviews were written to reward a company and 87% of the reviews were generally positive in tone.
And if the overwhelmingly positive tone of those comments wasn’t enough, there’s more positive news that it’s only a small minority of reviewers who mostly write negative reviews. And even when they appear on your site, keep in mind that those negative reviews provide some needed authenticity for all those positive ones you’re getting.
So don’t fear your audience, accept their feedback. Passing up the benefits of user reviews because of a grumpy minority of 2% just doesn’t make sense.
