Earning Loyalty Through Wi-Fi

I travel a lot. I do almost all of my work online. I need internet access alot when I am traveling. Want my loyalty and travel dollars? Here’s how to earn them.
- Give me internet access anywhere I’m waiting for more than an hour. I am a captive audience and I need to check email make me happy by giving me internet access. Time was that only Virgin had internet access and if the schedule was right I would pay the premium price in order to work online for the 6 hours from San Francisco to Boston. That’s the loyalty that internet access brought. Oh and Amtrak, if I can get online at 25,000 ft over the Dakotas then I don’t know why it’s so difficult at sea level in Connecticut. Hook us up on the Acela and we’ll never fly the shuttle again.
- Don’t charge me for internet access. Hotels especially, I’m already shelling out a few hundred dollars a night for the room, do not nickel and dime me to get online. $20 a day for internet access is criminal and does not build brand loyalty. You know what does? Making me feel like a guest who has access to amenities. That’s probably why you have exercise machines and I bet that they cost a lot more than the router and internet access, not to mention the room that it takes up. You want my name and email address? Need me to sign up for your rewards program? Fine. I’ll happily hand them over for free wi-fi and probably come back to your hotel again because you treated me well. I’m not alone in this so get it together and earn our loyalty.
Soon all the airlines will have in-flight internet making it less of a perk, but that’s where making it free or for registration builds my loyalty to your airline. Airports be warned; you may think that you are the only game in town and can charge me for wi-fi, but that’s not always the case. The first time that I flew into Oakland rather than San Francisco and found their free wi-fi, after a few ads, I started some buzz about the little, less crowded, internet friendly, airport across the bay. Give me what I want and I will praise and reward you. - Give me the power. My computer battery won’t last 6 hours, especially if I’m uploading pictures to Flickr. I need an AC jack to power up my laptop. The Acela earned my love by providing outlets, being able to arrive 5 minutes before the train leaves and not having to take my shoes off. When you give me internet access, back it up with some electrical support otherwise you’re just a tease. Every seat doesn’t require an outlet, 2 outlets on each side of the aisle is fine and builds some community with the business travelers.
There you go. Give me wireless access anywhere I’m waiting for over an hour while traveling, make it fee (I’m willing to register with you) and provide the power to make the most of the internet and I am yours.
