Google Alerts

Google AlertsGoogle alerts are a handy way of keeping tabs on what’s going on and being said online for people, companies, brands and ideas that you are interested in. Through Google Alerts you can have emails sent to any email address that you would like whenever a specific keyword phrase is found in new results online. Unfortunately you cannot create an RSS feed of these alerts from Google, but there are third party sites that will do this for you.

Create a Google AlertWhen setting up an alert you can select how often you want the alert to be sent (once-a-week, once-a-day, as-it-happens) and what you want searched (news, blogs, the web, everything). Your search can also be limited in the same way that a Google search can be with more or less exactitude.

I recommend setting up searches for any company or brand that you are working with as well as the product or service that they are involved with, any trademarks and slogans, etc. Casting a wide net does lead to a lot of useless hits that you needs to skim through, but it’s worth it for the early notice of information about your clients. It’s also handy for tracking how your online marketing is doing.

If you haven’t already thought about it, setting up an alert for your own name is a good idea too. It’s like having eyes on the back of your head online and you never know what you will find.

Which reminds me, the woman in Singapore who’s heart is being broken by another Thomas Trumble out there, I’m very sorry and I hope that you find the someone that you are looking for.
