How To Add Your RSS Feed For Indexing by Google

Google Webmaster Tools MenuA couple weeks ago Google announced that they would be crawling RSS feeds in order to discover the latest pages on websites as soon as possible.  However they don’t provide a whole lot of detail on how to set that up and ensure that it is being done.  Here’s how:

To add your RSS feed as a sitemap to be used by Google for indexing your website:

  1. On the Webmaster Tools home page, click the site you want.
  2. Under Site configuration, click Sitemaps
  3. Click the submit a sitemap button
    Webmaster Tools Sitemap Submit Window
  4. Enter the location of your RSS feed in the window and click submit site map
  5. The RSS feed will begin to download, there will be a clock face in the status.  The download should be complete in a little while and the number of URLs submitted and indexed will appear

Google suggests that you test your robots.txt, using the robots.txt tester that is also in Google Webmaster Tools, to ensure that Googlebot can crawl your feeds and find your pages as fast as possible   Expand the Test a robots.txt file link at the bottom of the page for detailed directions on how to do that.
