It Takes a Villiage To Design An Avatar
Earlier this month I asked whether I should change my Twitter avatar because I’d unconsciously created multiple icons for myself, a little yellow Ganesh that stuck out nicely in a tweet stream, and my glasses on a blue background that you see here on my blog. The poll results were inconclusive. While keeping the ganesh won the popular vote the open responses suggested a bunch of other options.
Christopher Harting mocked up a ganesh wearing my glasses, which was also a suggestion of @Nerdstar. But Rachel Levy was the catalyst for my final decision when she laid down the law at South by Southwest and said that I absolutely had to have my picture on my avatar, which after all was best practice, and then threatened not to talk to me again unless I did it. Kevin Duffy was my inspiration, or did I just rip him off, for a way to both include my picture in the avatar while still having it stand out in the tweetstream by using a desaturated photo and a bright background. A few hours with Pixlr.com and viola a new avatar that suits all of my needs, achieves best practices, and got some nice complements.
Thanks everyone for your feedback.
