danah boyd keynoteThe following is a liveblog of danah boyd’s keynote presentation on privacy and publicity in social networks focusing specifically on the experience of teens and non-privileged people as well as expectations for privacy derived from real world experience and how that is translated into the online world.  The keynote was given at South by Southwest on March 13, 2010.

danah boyd has also posted a full transcript of her keynote.

How does social media transform society and how will it impact society? Puzzles to consider.

No matter how many times a straight white male tells you privacy is dead, no not believe them.

Why did Google Buzz fail? Integrated public facing system into private system (GMail)

Google Buzz Fail – Google assumed that people would opt out if they had issues with privacy.

Easier for people to flip out about buzz than to opt out.

“ASL” in a chat room was a social ritual that profiles eliminated

Google Buzz found the social media version of the Uncanny Valley

Behavioral network – people in a location, Articulated network – people communicated with, Buzz collapsed them

RW allows awareness of who is likely to hear private info shared in a public space. Issue still evolving in SM

Social media walls don’t just have ears, they also have mouths.

FB Privacy Change Fail – default choice “everyone” 65% chose it

Yet to find a single person that understood what their privacy settings were what they thought they were.

PII – Personally identifiable information PEI – Personally embarrassing information

Teens primarily worry about what do they have to gain from SM, adults what they have to lose

Privacy in public – how do we do this online? with peers? with people who have control over us?

FB about communicating w/ people you already know, Twitter about obtaining audiences and following those people

Miley Cyrus YouTube video on quitting Twitter & needing privacy. That’s celebrity culture? That’s being a teen.

2 types of memes – those that start outside the system and those from within the system

Engagement in public spaces is very different for people from privileged and non privileged people

What defines privileged and non-privileged people online? Public School Teacher?

danah boyd is fascinating. I could listen to her all afternoon

Chat roulette is a social media site with strangers, it’s public and yet anonymous

Chat Roulette is just the latest privacy/ publicity mashups, there will be more

Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 meant dancing with users for UI, now need to do this with privacy

Need to talk to kids about the big issues of privacy and control not “back in my day”

Marketers – just because you see something on SM doesn’t mean you know what’s going on

Sometime the more public you are the more private you can be

@zephoria Thanks for the keynote great stuff to think about.

RT@Pistachio Horrifying slide by @danah of racist tweets during the BET awards. BUT including tweeters names is publicizing what was public, but obscure

There are visual and hip hop representations of danah boyd’s keynote. Nice tech art merger.
