Online Video Viewership Continues to Spread
New data about the consumption of video online provides a few choice nuggets.
- Almost half of the U.S. population watches as least one online video per month
- The average age of viewers is 36
- Viewers are almost evenly split between men and women
- Most viewers watch at home
- Viewing sessions typically last more than 10 minutes
- People use online video for entertainment, rather than to be informed
- The types of videos that people watch most frequently are funny videos (62%), news (42%), music videos (41%), and user-generated content (40%).
- Recommendations were key in helping people find the videos that they watch
- Quality of search was the most important factor in selecting a website followed by selection and the ability to save favorite videos
This is all from a study conducted by Frank N. Magid Associates and commissioned by video-sharing site Metacafe. Unfortunately I can’t find the actual data anywhere, but MediaPost has a synopsis.
