Politics 2.0 Favoring Democrats? Really?

Democrat DonkeyRichard MacManus is posting that Web 2.0 favors democrats

based on the number of friends that Democrats have versus the number of friends that Republicans have. That and a digg profile for Obama. This seems like a pretty flimsy argument to me.

If you assume that Facebook and MySpace have a younger population than the country in general and that younger people are more likely to vote democratic, then the fact that Democratic candidates have more friends then Republican candidates seems like non-news to me and certainly doesn’t indicate that Web 2.0 favors the Dems just that they are fishing where the fish are.

All major presidential candidates have MySpace profiles, I’ve got to assume that they have Facebook profiles as well. Saying that Web 2.0 favors Democrats is like saying that yard signs in Massachusetts favor Democrats. Web 2.0 is necessary for all candidates to connect with their supporters. If right now those supporters are primarily for Democratic candidates it has no bearing on its usefulness to candidates of any party nor whether the current party demographics will remain as it is.
