Still Waiting For Promised Social Media BlackBerry Applications In 2009
The calendar is getting thin for 2009 and the handful of applications that were promised in 2009 and I’ve been waiting for still have not seen the light of day.
Twitter
Back in September CrackBerry leaked news about RIM working on their own Twitter client (project banshee). As a native app we could expect Address Book integration and a small size. CrackBerry guessed that it should be released “soon.” I’d call “soon” to mean in about 3 months and based on BlackBerry’s previous experience with the FaceBook app, I’d think that this should be pretty easy to wrap up, but that doesn’t seem to the the case. 2 months have come and gone with no word. December 25th would be 3 months since CrackBerry’s post. Could my BlackBerry be getting a little blue bird from RIM for Christmas?
Foursquare
I started playing with Foursquare at the end of the summer. As a member of the smart phone community with neither an iPhone nor an Android OS phone I have been app-less stick using their mobile site. Foursquare did promise an app for we BlackBerry folks and I dutifully signed up to be a beta tester. Now at the beginning of December I am still waiting.
However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. TheNextWeb.com reported on Saturday November 28th that with the completion of the API the beta will be coming soon, is already in use by 50 lucky folks, and should be released in “early December”. The screen shot looks promising so I’m hoping that we Superusers get first crack at the beta.
LinkedIn
Most recently, on November 9th, LinkedIn has promised a native BlackBerry app “by the end of this year” and showed off some screen shots to boot. There hasn’t been any word from LinkedIn since the BlackBerry Developer Conference and delivery by the end of the year is a short time frame so if they do miss their self imposed deadline I won’t be shocked. On the other hand if they do I will be impressed and even more unhappy with the delays from the Twitter team.
This could be a busy season for BlackBerry apps or I could be disappointed. Hopefully I’ll be wracking my brain trying to figure out how to free up some memory on my little 8310 to install these new tools.
UPDATE – wouldn’t you know it, but within hours of posting this I’m beta testing one of these applications. Not supposed to say which, but let’s just say that it makes use extensively of my BlackBerry’s GPS capabilities.

Please send me a link where I can be a tester of LinkedIn
Sorry Russell, I can’t help you out there, but will post links to all applications as well as reviews when they are available.
