ÜberTwitter: A Breakthrough Twitter Application for the BlackBerry

I was turned on to ÜberTwitter for BlackBerry the other night by Amanda Palmer’s use of the application. ÜberTwitter is not getting a lot of press and their website has very little information about the application or it’s features, but don’t let that scare you away. ÜberTwitter’s combination of speed, reliability and features has not only made this my BlackBerry Twitter application of choice in record time it has completely changed my experience of Twitter on a cell phone. The different views that ÜberTwitter provides expands the Twitter experience on the phone from a broadcast medium into a truely social and exploratory one. Then it gives your the tools to interact with that network easily and deeply.

First of all there is ÜberTwitter’s speed. Either I’ve been using slow and buggy BlackBerry apps or ÜberTwitter is outstanding in this area. Your Twitter stream is updated regularly and fairly instantaneously and without any noticeable lag in functionality like I have noticed in other apps. Sending Tweets is just as easy and fast.
If speed and reliability were the only benefits that UberTwitter brought to the smart phone Twitter experience that would have been enough, but ÜberTwitter provides a smorgasbord of features that mightily enhance browsing and posting. ÜberTwitter has standard views like the Twitter timeline, your friend’s updates, replies and direct messages. Then ÜberTwitter takes it up a notch with other views like Everyone Near You that shows Tweets from nearby Twitterers, Trending Topics that lists the top 10 topics on Twitter with links to recent Tweets on those topics, and a Search Twitter feature as well. You can view My Friends with detailed information on your friends which is helpful to check a bio or click-through to a website, and My Followers which has the same information on everyone following you.

ÜberTwitter also expands your view of Twitterers beyond a profile picture. Selecting “view” for a Tweet gives you detail on the Twitterer including their name, bio, location, website and number of followers. Users who have location enabled from their phone will display a Google map of where they are. Another great display addition are Twitpics downloaded and visible without having to click through to them. It would be great if that was true for other sites like Flickr as well.
Twittering yourself is also enhanced with easy ReTweeting, Copy Tweet, Spell Check, and Shrink Tweet that condenses words in Tweets to help you keep within 140 characters, example. There is also a setting to update your Google Talk status with your Tweets if you like.
Finally, ÜberTwitter utilizes the same cell tower triangulation trick that Google Maps does, or GPS if you have it, to determine your location and then include your location in your Tweets, pictures, and profile. I don’t know why ÜberTwitter is not getting the amount of notice as other applications or has limited support on their website, but the combination of speed and features that ÜberTwitter deliveres makes it by far the best Twitter app that I’ve ever used on the BlackBerry. Give it a try and see for yourself.
