Wi-fi Comes To The Acela
And It’s Free For Now!
In my continuing obsession with wi-fi and modes of transportation, a friend riding on the Acela earlier this week reported that she had free wi-fi on the train from Boston to New York. Evidently Amtrak announced the addition of wi-fi to the Acela in November, with little fanfare, as a means to boost ridership and has been slowly rolling this out on some trains. Some trains may have had wireless as early as May according to Baratunde Thurston who reports less than stellar connection speeds. For now the wi-fi is free, but that is subject to change and I suspect it will in order to subsidize our chronically underfunded train system here in the states.
Personally I love traveling by train and refuse to fly between Boston to NY. The equal length of time, lack of lines, leg room and not having to take off my shoes for security would have been enough, but the power outlet for my laptop and beer sealed the deal so that I’ll never fly to New York again. Years ago it felt like I produced an entire set of elearning courses while riding between Boston and New York. The addition of wi-fi to the Acela experience makes it that much sweeter. I can’t wait for my next trip to NY to give it a try.

Your report is semi-accurate. Wi-Fi is currently being installed on the Acela express and set to debut in early 2010. Anything reported thusfar regarding performance is not indicative of what will ultimately be provided as the previous test units used a different technology. Expect more ‘fanfare’ from Amtrak are deployment nears…
